The Fragrant Year: Seasonal meditations with aromatherapy oils by Jane Grayson

1993 The Aquarian Press (Imprint of Harper Collins Publishers)

I found a little gem of a book the other day.  The Fragrant Year.  It is beautifully illustrated and takes you through the year in meditations and in scent.  It shows you how to balance yourself in nature's energies so that you can center yourself and discover your true self.

I found it delightful and very interesting.  The first chapter I turned to was Leo (July 23-Aug 23).  I found her section on Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus), a favorite of mine.  The author states, "This virile grass can be harvested three or four times a year...The essence is an opaque yellow-gold...the predominant scent is Lemon, but with a denser, more resilient quality.  It is very a very cheerful pick-me-up with the effect of breezing through the mind...An antiseptic tonic, it makes an excellent room freshener, but especially at this time of year when late summer humidity encourages fungal infections, mosquitoes and flies.  It is not a spiritual plant, but demonstrates the practicality and service of the family it comes from."

The chapter mentions several other scents, and then ends with how you can use them to enhance your meditation practices.  A well thought out way of experimenting with essential oils and finding new ways to incorporate them into your life.
