The Everything Dash Diet Meal Prep Cookbook: 200 Easy, Make-Ahead Recipes to Help You Lose Weight and Improve Your Health

by Karman Meyer, RDN

Simon & Schuster Inc. 2023 (272 pages)

The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet can help lower blood pressure in just two weeks. But that isn't the only thing it does.  It can help improve your health and lose weight if you follow it as a lifestyle change instead of a diet.  It also helps in keeping your serving sizes in check.  There is a focus on fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products, and the recipes contained within are easy, delicious and fun.  I've been looking for a cookbook to help me with menu planning and this one does it.

The author says you may be excited to meal-plan but to only do it a week at a time, to help you get in the routine of meal prepping and help you to avoid food waste and feelings of being overwhelmed.  No longer will you get to the end of the day and say I'm too tired to cook let's eat out.  You will save a ton of money as well as turn your health around.  Simple tips provided might be simple, but it helps to be reminded and to help set up a routine.  Her advice?  Buy and roast a whole chicken each week for several dinners and use the carcass for making your own healthy broth to make a soup at least once a week.  Use dinner leftovers for lunches. How-to's on overnight oats makes breakfast easy and delicious.  Also, roast vegetables once a week and make extras to reheat.

Recipes such as 30 Minute Ground Beef Pizza, Black Bean Burgers, Lemon Blueberry Quinoa Breakfast Bars, Chewy Granola Bars, Zucchini Oatmeal Cookies and Chocolate Strawberry Power Smoothies recipes offer a wide variety of tastes and meal choices.  The appendix contains meal plans too.  I was quite surprised at the information contained, the easy recipes and the commonsense planning for making your health top priority.
