A Farmgirl's Table

by Jessica Robinson

Gibbs Smith, 2017 (176 pages)

I have a passion for canning and preserving food.  Recently I found the perfect recipe for canning pie filling.  I will share that in a future blog.  It really is amazing and makes for quick and easy pies while preserving fruit.  Previously I would freeze my fruits, but this recipe is a game changer.

That's why I picked up this book.  It was recommended as a canning and recipe book.  The author, a New England farmgirl who was transplanted to North Carolina writes a breezy and story-filled book most of us gardeners will find refreshing and fun.  Her easy, simple recipes from garden or farmer's market, make stocking your pantry with jars of wonderful harvests exciting.  There are also recipes for making homemade bread, family meals, and for entertaining.  There are recipes for lemonade, hearty main dishes and desserts.  Nothing fussy here---easy is the buzz word.  It is the author's life she is sharing with readers.

Robinson, with French-Canadian and Polish family roots, says family influenced her cooking style. "Much of my own recipe development," the author writes, "is inspired by the many handwritten recipes that have been passed down by multiple generations."

Some people may complain that the recipes are not well organized, but many conversational recipe books follow the conversation in presenting recipes.  It didn't bother me.  The stories and personal advice were interesting enough to carry through, and when I found a recipe that I wanted to try, I simply made note of it.  Whether you are new to canning, or a seasoned pro, you'll find this a refreshing read.
